Virgin Voyages Tips Every New Sailor Needs in 2026

Most of what goes wrong on a first Virgin Voyages sailing goes wrong in the first three hours, and almost all of it is avoidable.

I have sailed over 35 times. These are the mistakes I watch first timers make on every single one, in the order you will run into them.

Some are small and irritating, like not being able to open your cabin door. Some cost you real money, like not knowing that your onboard credit expires the moment you walk off.

None of them require you to be an expert. They just require somebody to tell you first.

Do These Things Before You Board

Four things, and all of them are easier at home than in a queue.

Download the Virgin Voyages app, and make sure it is the current one. The app was replaced. If you sailed a while ago, the version on your phone is the old one and it will not work.

Check in, and fill out the health form 24 hours before you sail. Both live in the app. Neither takes long and both hold you up at the terminal if you skip them.

Pack the motion sickness kit even if you do not usually need it. I am not always affected and I still bring patches and tablets, because you cannot buy what you want in the middle of an ocean.

Know what you cannot bring. The list is longer than people expect, and it is posted at the terminal where it is too late to do anything about it.

The ones that catch people: CBD products, anything sharp, power tools, self defence items, sports and recreational goods, and single use plastic.

Luggage tags are optional, by the way. Print them if you like. If you do not, the porters will sort you out at the pier.

Getting to the Port Without a Hitch

Do not turn up early. This is the single most common embarkation mistake. Virgin Voyages boards you at your boarding time and not before, and most terminals will not let you wait inside.

So arriving three hours ahead does not get you on the ship three hours sooner. It gets you standing outside a building in the heat with your suitcases.

Arrive at your boarding time. Earlier does not get you on sooner.

You board at your time, not your friends’ time. If you are travelling with people in other cabins, you may all have different boarding slots, and you cannot pool them.

A RockStar in your group cannot walk you on with them, and a 2pm slot cannot join a 4pm one. Everybody boards on their own time.

Check your bags at the pier if you want to. Hand them to a porter and they will appear outside your cabin later. Or walk everything on yourself, which is fine too.

Some ports are a simple walk on. Others are a bus and a long ramp.

One thing worth knowing: some ports are a simple walk on, and others put you on a bus and up a long ramp. If you are carrying everything yourself, that is the day you will feel it.

Your First Hour On Board

Everybody’s instinct is to go and eat. Do one thing first.

Connect to the Wi-Fi properly, because most people think they have and have not. Free Wi-Fi is included. You only pay if you want faster speeds, and on a real holiday you do not need them.

Two things trip everyone up. Turn your VPN off, because only the work tier supports one. And you are not actually connected until the page asks for your cabin number and your birthday. If it has not been asked, you are not on, no matter what the Wi-Fi symbol says.

Your cabin is ready the moment you board. Go and drop your bags.

Your cabin is ready the moment you board. People wander the ship with their bags for hours because they assume it is not. Go and drop everything.

Then book anything you actually care about. Most entertainment is first come, first served, but dinner-and-a-show needs a booking because the seats are finite.

Same for restaurants, and here is the part nobody tells you: they hold back about 30% of reservations for after boarding. If the app told you everything was full before you sailed, try again now.

You also do not have to do any of it yourself. There is a desk for dining, a desk for entertainment and a desk for shore things, open every day, with a crew whose job is to book it for you.

Watch the muster video from the tablet in your cabin. It is the safety briefing, it takes minutes, and everyone in the cabin can knock it out together.

One small thing that causes real frustration at the door: hold your wearable flat against the reader with the side without the writing facing the pad. That is the whole trick.

Meet Your Cabin Attendant Properly

This is the five minutes with the highest return on your whole sailing, and first timers skip it constantly.

Let them give you the tour. In that tour they will tell you three things you genuinely need.

The balcony door has to be turned, not just closed. If the handle is not turned, the air conditioning will not run. People step out to the hammock, slide the door shut, go and enjoy their day, and come back to a cabin at a hundred degrees.

Press the red button before you go to sleep. That is, do not disturb. Press it on night one and nobody knocks at 9am on the morning you wanted to sleep in.

Ask for your beds to be split now, not before you sailed. People try to arrange this in advance. Just tell your attendant on board and it is done in minutes.

One catch worth knowing before you book a girls’ trip: RockStar beds do not split. It is a single mattress. If that matters, it matters at booking, not at boarding.

Don’t forget to pack THIS!

Virgin Voyages has reimagined sailing and what you need to pack on for this trip is DIFFERENT than a normal cruise line. There are many items I wish I knew to bring (that I didn’t have with me on my first sailing).

Food: What First Timers Get Wrong

There are over 20 places to eat and every one of them is included. No specialty dining fees, no upcharge restaurants. A couple of individual items carry a supplement, a big tomahawk or a seafood tower, and you never have to order them.

The portions are not small. You just have to ask. People get a plate, think that is all there is, and quietly go hungry. Order seconds. Order thirds. Order six. Nobody is counting and nobody minds.

There is no buffet, and The Galley is not one. It is a food hall, and the thing most people miss is that you do not have to queue at a counter. Sit down, raise the flag on your table, and someone comes to take your order. It is a far better experience.

You cannot take food away from the six sit-down restaurants. This surprises people and it is worth understanding why: if you could, the ship would be covered in abandoned plates within a day. From The Galley and everywhere else, take what you like.

Two things people sail past for a whole week:

  • The grab and go fridges at The Galley and The Dock House carry items you cannot get anywhere else on the ship, including the tres leches cake.
  • Ship Eats is room service, ordered from the app or your cabin tablet. Roughly 40 to 60 minutes, and there is a delivery fee unless you order enough.

And the complaint I hear most from repeat sailors is wrong. People say the food never changes. There is a rotating pizza, a rotating ice cream flavour, a rotating soup, a rotating salad and a rotating burger. It changes constantly, and almost nobody notices.

One more: some dishes exist on one ship only. Look for the little ship symbol on the menu and order that one.

Drinks, Bar Tab and Sailor Loot

This is where people lose actual money, so it is worth five minutes.

There is no drink package. Most sailors pay per drink or buy a bar tab. A bar tab is not a requirement; it is a discount: put money up front and Virgin Voyages adds a bit on top.

Red band or black band, everything on board runs off the wearable.

Around 90% of sailors wear a red band and pay as they go. A black band is RockStar, which comes with an in-cabin bar, and Mega RockStar adds unlimited drinks around the ship.

The bar tab is not only for alcohol. It covers premium drinks generally. Coffee in The Galley is free; a flat white at the coffee bar is not. Smoothies and fresh pressed juices are premium too.

Here is the expensive one. Both bar tab and Sailor Loot are use it or lose it. They do not roll over to your next sailing and you do not get the money back. Spend it before you walk off.

They also come off in a set order. Buy a drink and it comes out of your bar tab first; once that hits zero it starts on your Sailor Loot. Buy a t-shirt and it comes straight off Sailor Loot, because it is not a drink.

One more thing that confuses new sailors: Sailor Loot often does not appear until you are on board, sometimes an hour in. It is not missing. Do not panic on day one.

You cannot pay with cash or a card anywhere on the ship. Everything goes on the wearable, which has your card, your bar tab and your Sailor Loot tied to it.

Two last ones. Every stateroom may bring two normal sized bottles of wine aboard, and champagne counts as wine. And anything you buy from the duty free shop is delivered to you at the end of the sailing, not handed over on the spot, so do not buy a bottle planning to open it that night.

Entertainment and Parties

Stop checking the app a month out. This is the complaint I get most and it is based on nothing. People look four weeks ahead, see an empty schedule and conclude their sailing has no entertainment.

It fills in late. A week out there is more, two days out more again, and it keeps changing once you are on board. The festival stage in particular rotates its acts sailing to sailing, so you genuinely will not know until you are nearly there.

Most shows are first come first served. How early depends on your sailing.

Most shows are first come, first served, so turning up as it starts is a gamble. How early depends entirely on your sailing. Sometimes 15 minutes is plenty. On a full ship with one night of the big show, it can be well over an hour.

A quick run through the ones with rules of their own:

  • Bingo cards are real money, in and out, and they are sold in a strict window. Five minutes late and they will not sell you one.
  • Karaoke at The Groupie is free, but you sign up on the day, on paper, in the room itself.
  • The arcade is free. No coins, no charges. Go and play Ms. Pac-Man.
  • The Grog Walk sells out on the first night, and it is the best way on the ship to meet people.

You do not have to dress up for any of it. Not Scarlet Night, not the pajama party. Wear what you are comfortable in and nobody will look twice.

Two timing details worth planning around. The sail away party has free bubbles for 30 minutes, starting about 15 minutes after the party does. And Scarlet Night starts at 9pm on every ship, every time, so do not book a late dinner that night unless you are happy to miss it.

The Mistake That Costs People the Most

It is not any of the above. It is over-planning.

People come aboard with a schedule and ask me what they should be doing right now. Honestly? Nothing. That is the answer.

I have done this enough times to have made the mistake myself, and gone home needing a holiday to recover from the holiday.

Some things nobody tells you are allowed:

  • You do not have to get off at every port. Staying aboard is how you get a hot tub to yourself.
  • You do not have to use the app at all. There are printed schedules and screens all over the ship.
  • You do not have to book dinner in advance. I usually sail without a single reservation and eat at slightly odd hours, and it is fine.

And when you get lost, which you will on day one: go to mid. Front, back, middle. The middle of the ship connects to everything, so get there first, then go up or down, then go where you were heading.

The Short Version for Your First Sailing

Arrive at your boarding time, connect to the wifi properly, drop your bags in a cabin that is already ready, and give your attendant five minutes. That is the whole first hour handled.

After that, ask for seconds, spend your Sailor Loot before you leave, turn the balcony handle, and stop checking the app a month out.

Everything else you can genuinely get wrong and still have a brilliant week. And if you want a hand picking the right sailing before any of this matters, that is a conversation worth having, and it costs you nothing.
