Virgin Voyages Richard’s Rooftop What To Know

If you’re considering booking a Rockstar suite on Virgin Voyages, one of the most exclusive perks you’ll hear about is access to Richard’s Rooftop — a private, VIP-only outdoor lounge that delivers both luxury and tranquility at sea.

In this post, I’m breaking down exactly what it is, what’s changed, and whether it’s truly worth it.

What Is Richard’s Rooftop?

Virgin Voyages Richard’s Rooftop is an exclusive retreat for Rockstar guests — those booked in one of the 78 Rockstar Quarters among the 1,300+ cabins on each ship. Located at the very front of the ship on Deck 15, it spans both port and starboard sides, giving you panoramic views of the ocean and a sense of being at the top of the world.

Unlike public spaces on the ship, Richard’s Rooftop is only accessible to those wearing the distinctive black Rockstar wristband. This isn’t a space where your non-Rockstar friends can tag along, even if it’s a special occasion. And yes, the exclusivity is enforced — especially now that access is more strictly monitored.

Richard’s Sunset Hour: What’s Changed

One of the most popular times to visit Richard’s Rooftop is during Richard’s Sunset Hour, which happens daily from 5 to 6 PM. Originally, this hour was all about unlimited Moët & Chandon champagne, but the experience has recently been expanded.

Now, during Sunset Hour, you’ll enjoy:

  • A full cocktail menu (not just Moët!)
  • Table service from attentive crew
  • The option to mix and mingle or relax in peace

It’s an elevated social hour that feels both luxurious and relaxed. If you’re someone who enjoys sipping cocktails with sweeping ocean views and fewer crowds, this is your golden hour.

Seating, Hot Tubs & the Overall Vibe

What sets Richard’s Rooftop apart is the space-to-guest ratio. While the rooftop is expansive, only about 6% of sailors on any given voyage are Rockstars — which means you’re never fighting for a lounger or a spot in the hot tub.

Speaking of hot tubs:

  • There are two, one on each side
  • They’re larger than the ones in public areas
  • Late-night swimmers, take note: they’re usually cleaned around 2 AM, so plan accordingly

The vibe at Richard’s Rooftop is best described as chill and elevated. This isn’t a party deck — you’ll hear mellow music, enjoy thoughtful design, and be surrounded by other guests who are there to unwind, not turn up. On a packed sailing, this spot becomes a welcome refuge.

Don’t forget to pack THIS!

Virgin Voyages has reimagined sailing and what you need to pack on for this trip is DIFFERENT than a normal cruise line. There are many items I wish I knew to bring (that I didn’t have with me on my first sailing).

Food & Drink Options (Yes, You Can Order)

In addition to drinks, food is now available in Richard’s Rooftop via a curated menu from Sun Club Cafe. Some items are exclusive to this space.

Simply:

  • Take a seat anywhere
  • Flag down a crew member
  • Order off the menu or walk up to the bar yourself

Hours for the bar typically run from 9 or 10 AM until 7 PM, though access to the space itself is 24/7.

I’m going to be honest: I’m a super savvy traveler and I didn’t believe travel agents could get a better deal than me..

What If It’s Raining or Too Windy?

Because Richard’s Rooftop is fully outdoors and at the very front of the ship, wind and rain can sometimes make it a little intense. When that happens, Sunset Hour is moved to Sip Lounge on Deck 7, also located at the front of the ship. The vibe is different, but the drinks, service, and exclusivity remain intact.

Top FAQs About Richard’s Rooftop

  1. Can I bring my non-Rockstar friends?
No. Access is limited to those staying in a Rockstar suite. No exceptions.
  2. Is it open all day?
Yes — the space is open 24/7, though bar service typically ends around 7 PM.
  3. Do Mega Rockstars still use it?
Absolutely. Even with unlimited drinks included elsewhere, the vibe, views, and social hour keep many Mega Rockstars coming back.

Bottom Line

Richard’s Rooftop is one of the most elegant, low-key perks that Rockstar sailors get access to — and it continues to evolve. With its private seating areas, premium cocktail hour, expanded food options, and relaxing vibe, it’s a sanctuary on what’s already an elevated cruise experience.

If you’re debating whether Rockstar is worth the splurge, this space may tip the scales in its favor.
