Top Entertainment Mistakes on Virgin Voyages

The top mistakes sailors make around Virgin Voyages entertainment can leave you stressed, confused, or missing out.

In this guide, I’m breaking down exactly what you need to know about shows, themed parties, what to book (and when), plus tips that will save you time, frustration, and serious FOMO.

This post is based on over 20 sailings and a lot of sailor-watching (not as creepy as it sounds). And by the wayโ€”thereโ€™s a full YouTube version of this blog post. Youโ€™ll want to watch it by clicking here or below!

What You Actually Need to Book for Entertainment

A lot has changed when it comes to booking entertainment. Back in the day, everything had to be booked on the shipโ€”and it still doesโ€”but now, only a few things actually require booking:

  1. Paid events like Grog Walk (a bar crawl, read about it here) or Loterรญa (think bingo and mezcal).
  2. Dinner + show experiences like It’s a Ship Show, LOL’s Supper Club, and Another Rose.

These sell out fast, so hereโ€™s my advice:

  • Get on the ship
  • Get on the Wi-Fi
  • Open the app and book what sounds fun

The biggest mistake? Doing nothing. People wait too long and then scramble on standby. Even more tips for embarkatio day are in this blog post.

App Mistakes and Timing Tips

Let me be real. If you’re not opening the app once you’re on board, you’re setting yourself up for disappointment.

Even just 5 minutes of flipping through the entertainment section can make the difference between having options or missing out entirely.

The other mistake? Thinking what you see before your sailing is the final entertainment lineup. It’s not.

Better approach: Use the app to book, but check the printed daily schedule or your in-room TV to confirm. (And yes, Virgin’s app is still being worked on. A new version is coming.)

Different Ships = Different Entertainment

The Virgin Voyages Lady ships may look nearly identical, but their entertainment lineups are not.

So many sailors get confused by this. They’re used to other cruise lines where ship size and features vary. But on Virgin, it’s the shows and themed events that make each sailing different.

Donโ€™t assume the show you loved on Scarlet will be on Valiant or Resilient. If youโ€™ve sailed before and want new entertainment, book a different ship.

Don’t forget to pack THIS!

Virgin Voyages has reimagined sailing and what you need to pack on for this trip is DIFFERENT than a normal cruise line. There are many items I wish I knew to bring (that I didn’t have with me on my first sailing).

Themed Parties: Know Before You Go

There are a few consistent themed parties on every Virgin sailing:

Some of the top mistakes around these parties:

  • Expecting a theme party every night (you wonโ€™t always get that on longer sailings).
  • Packing for a party thatโ€™s not even happening.
  • Thinking theyโ€™ll be the only one dressed up (or not dressed up).

Thereโ€™s no wrong way to do it. One time, I wore pajamas to the Scarlet Night afterparty. Seriously, do you. Itโ€™s a no-judgment zone.

Pro tip: Scarlet Night starts promptly at 9:00 p.m. in the roundabout on Decks 6 & 7. Get your spot early or risk missing the best partsโ€”especially if you’re short like me.

Note: Brilliant Lady will feature a reimagined Scarlet Night and likely a different party in place of Pajama Night due to its cooler weather sailings.

Festival Stage & Rotating Acts

The Festival Stage is Virgin’s wildcard.

Itโ€™s where you’ll find rotating entertainers for a few days, a few weeks, or a few months. Favorites like Ben Price, The Magnets, and Plan V often make appearances.

Many sailors mistakenly assume what they see in the app before the trip is final. But new acts can be added even after you board. So keep checking.

I’m going to be honest: I’m a super savvy traveler and I didn’t believe travel agents could get a better deal than me..

Bingo, Karaoke, and Free Hidden Gems

Surprise! Some of the most fun entertainment options are totally free:

  • The Arcade (Miss Pac-Man is a classic)
  • Karaoke rooms inside The Groupie (sign up with a paper sheet, not in the app)

As for bingo, hereโ€™s the deal:

  • Diva-hosted bingo is a crowd favorite
  • You can use your Sailor Loot to buy cards
  • You must buy cards before the posted cut-off time (11:45 a.m. means 11:45 a.m.)

Also, donโ€™t get overzealousโ€”managing more than 3 bingo cards is chaos. Trust me.

Doing Too Much vs. Doing Nothing

Hereโ€™s a personal story: My mom went full throttle on a 5-night cruise and needed 8 days to recover. She wanted to see every show, attend every party, and go to every single thing. Sound familiar?

Trying to do it all can burn you out. But doing nothing? Totally valid too.

There are sailings where I didnโ€™t attend a single show, and I had an amazing time. Set your own pace. Itโ€™s your vacation.

Why You Should Talk to the Happenings Cast

Instead of a cruise director, Virgin has a team called the Happenings Cast. They’re the ones putting on unique entertainment and secret shows (yes, those exist!).

Want the inside scoop? Make friends with the cast early. They know whatโ€™s happening, whatโ€™s worth your time, and where to be.

Bonus Entertainment Tips Most Sailors Miss

  • Sailaway Party: Donโ€™t skip the bubbles from 5:45โ€“6:15 p.m. Itโ€™s one of the best parties to start your cruise off right.
  • Lighting warnings: Some events use strobe lights. If that affects you, check the event details in the app.
  • DJs are not jukeboxes: Check the theme night before asking for country at an ’80s night.
  • Please clap: Seriously. Weโ€™re a tough crowd sometimes. Clap for the performers!

Bottom Line

  • Only some entertainment needs to be booked, and it must be done once onboard.
  • Use the Virgin app, but double-check with printed schedules or your in-room TV.
  • Entertainment varies by ship and sailingโ€”donโ€™t assume itโ€™s the same across the fleet.
  • Themed parties are fun and low-pressureโ€”dress up, or donโ€™t!
  • Make time for the Happenings Cast and surprise shows. They’re always worth it.
